Doing Research on the Internet

When doing research it is very important to get the right information.  The Internet can help you find information quickly, but it is not always accurate.  You need to be careful to evaluate each website where you gather information.

If you are researching spiders you may find a site with great pictures and some good information, but it was created by Jimmy, the third grader down the street.  You may find another site with more great pictures and good information.  The second site is maintained by the International Society of Arachnology.  Yet another site is all about the Spiderman comic strip.  Which website is going to be the most valuable to you?

Begin by choosing a Search Engine and doing a Boolean or Advanced search.
Look at the list of websites and choose the one that appears to have what you are looking for.
Carefully look at the site to determine who created it.
Go to this link and find out more about website evaluation.
Be sure to use your BACK button and come back to this page.

Check out the following websites.  Which one do you think is the real White House site?  Click on the picture to find the answer after you look at each site.

If that wasn't hard enough, take a look at the next links.  Do these sites provide accurate information?  Do they provide enough information?  Do you know who made the sites?  Should you trust them?  Again, click on the picture to find out the truth after you have looked at the websites.
